The Devils Backbone
Opening
The pre credits- something about the war, bombs are being released. There its an injured boy, perhaps as ghost ? A boy is is also wrapped up and thrown in a river. Music is also very mysterious. There is also a boy who's upset, which we then question whether he might have killed the boy and thrown him in a water under the basement The lighting and colours during the pre credits are dark and gold. The gold may symbolise something deeper in the film, such as money.
The film is set in the 1930s, it starts off in a desert, which is very isolated. A ghost is also further hinted as Carlos explores the orphanage.
Carmen
Carmen is in charge of the orphanage, she's anxious of accepting another boy, as theres not enough food to feed the boys already. She seems very tired and burdened, she looks like she's struggling yet she's fighting through. She's always wearing black hinting at a death in her life.
At the beginning, a bomb from a hatch at the bottom of a flying old aircraft from old war times and it cuts the scene to a boy all alone with a bleeding head on the floor. The music paces and raises suspense to whats going to happen next. The scene then cuts to a basement like place with a mass of water and then it cuts to a few people in the water tied up and are slowly drowning to death while the boy overlooks them crying. This signifies murder and mystery in the movie, the music also esadds to this as the pace of it then changes to mysterious music that spikes high every moment.
